چکیده
Forest covers about one-third of the land area conterminous United States (CONUS) and plays an important role in offsetting carbon emissions supporting local economies. Growing interest forests as relatively cost-effective nature-based climate solutions, particularly restoration reforestation activities has increased demand for information on forest regrowth recovery following natural anthropogenic disturbances (e.g. fire, harvest, or thinning). However, a wall-to-wall mapping CONUS tree duration at annual time interval 30-m resolution is still challenging. In this study, we utilized cover products to develop dataset quantify over 1985–2017. The data used derive map from primary product U.S. Geological Survey’s Land Change Monitoring, Assessment, Projection (LCMAP) collection. LCMAP all available Landsat images detect classify Grass/Shrub Tree Cover transitions basis. average was then calculated each pixel. validated using human-interpreted reference that were collected independently. validation results show 1 year underestimation 6-year standard deviation error between map. southeastern CONUS, where major have been observed, our showed higher accuracy with less than one-year bias 3.6 years error. southeast took around 5 recover, which faster other regions CONUS. Many pixels had multiple during 33-year study period region. spatial pattern indicated intense harvesting Pacific Northwest coast region second main regrowth, but often decades recover. Given increasing can be assess well disturbance harvesting.

Land-cover change and avian diversity in the conterminous United States.
Changes in land use and land cover have affected and will continue to affect biological diversity worldwide. Yet, understanding the spatially extensive effects of land-cover change has been challenging because data that are consistent over space and time are lacking. We used the U.S. National Land Cover Dataset Land Cover Change Retrofit Product and North American Breeding Bird Survey data to e...
متن کاملEvaluating The National Land Cover Database Tree Canopy and Impervious Cover Estimates Across the Conterminous United States: A Comparison with Photo-Interpreted Estimates
The 2001 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) provides 30-m resolution estimates of percentage tree canopy and percentage impervious cover for the conterminous United States. Previous estimates that compared NLCD tree canopy and impervious cover estimates with photo-interpreted cover estimates within selected counties and places revealed that NLCD underestimates tree and impervious cover. Based ...
متن کاملA Bayesian Based Method to Generate a Synergetic Land-Cover Map from Existing Land-Cover Products
Global land cover is an important parameter of the land surface and has been derived by various researchers based on remote sensing images. Each land cover product has its own disadvantages and limitations. Data fusion technology is becoming a notable method to fully integrate existing land cover information. In this paper, we developed a method to generate a synergetic global land cover map (s...
متن کاملcentury drought in the conterminous United States
Droughts can be characterized by their severity, frequency and duration, and areal extent. Depth-area-duration analysis, widely used to characterize precipitation extremes, provides a basis for evaluation of drought severity when storm depth is replaced by an appropriate measure of drought severity. We used gridded precipitation and temperature data to force a physically-based macroscale hydrol...
متن کاملCarbon benefits from protected areas in the conterminous United States
BACKGROUND Conversion of forests to other land cover or land use releases the carbon stored in the forests and reduces carbon sequestration potential of the land. The rate of forest conversion could be reduced by establishing protected areas for biological diversity and other conservation goals. The purpose of this study is to quantify the efficiency and potential of forest land protection for ...
